The Witches Ball

An olde Apotropaic protection charm typically hung in windows of coastal cottages and even shops along the coasts of the UK.

Originally used to float fishing nets, these glass balls would often wash ashore and be repurposed as witch balls by the superstitious villagers. It was thought that if the shiny bright glass balls were hung in a window it would attract inquisitive malevolent spirits or witches imps into the ball, therefore trapping them inside.

There are many variations or this custom as far as I know all over the world, such as metallic balls made of Mercury glass placed in gardens, said to repel witches at the very sight of their ghastly reflection and some say the mirror would attract then repel the evil eye.

Isn’t it funny how folk customs variate from region to region!
