The Elder is a sacred tree that is said to contain a spirit called an “Elder Mother” who lives inside the tree, she is believed to have supernatural powers to protect the tree from harm. An offering must always be made when harvesting her flowers and berries.

Elderflower has long been used for Exorcisms, protection, house protection and home blessings, healing and love rites. The Elderflower is used to protect from spiritual and physical attacks, added to incense, floor washes or charm bags.

In darker folklore Elder was sometimes referred to as “Devil’s Wood” and it was believed that burning elderwood would bring the Devil into the house or even the Devil’s wood would bring a household death or disaster!
