The Witch mark has many different folk names such as a Hexafoil, Daisy Wheel, Sun Sheild, Flower of Life, yet all have the same intention behind them, Protection.
Witch marks or Apotropaic marks (Apotropaios: from the Greek meaning turning away evil) are believed to have originated In Europe and can be found as symbols carved into wooden hearths, stone walls, entry points to a place or dwelling or sacred objects: The symbol is in essence a mark to ward of evil and malevolent beings, (to turn away darkness) as witches, particularly during the hysteria of the 16th,17th century were believed to be in league with devil and these entities it is commonly known as a Witch Mark here in the UK.
